Well, 2021, you were certainly an ‘experience’ ?
Hot on the heels of the stinker that was 2020, we had such high hopes for 2021 and I think it’s fair to say it wasn’t quite what we’d all dreamt it would be. In practical terms for my photography, after a really tough and peculiar year in 2020 that saw a huge proportion of my photography take place on front doorsteps, 2021 was a lot easier and freer. Other than the lockdown in the early months of the year and multiple shoots having to be rescheduled due to positive tests / close contacts etc, I saw a return to relative normality photography-wise, and for that I’m so thankful – especially in light of my dear friends in the wedding industry who’ve been well and truly hauled over the coals for the second year running.
It’s really not in my nature to blow my own trumpet too much, but after the last couple of years, I’m going to focus on any and all positivity I can – and I honestly feel that 2021 has yielded my best work to date. Looking through all these photos, I feel that intense connection and joy shines through stronger than ever – perhaps the pandemic has sharpened my ability to see it, perhaps it’s sharpened families’ ability to feel it – my personal opinion is that it’s a powerful combination of the two. Whatever the reason, it’s a welcome silver lining and I’m so grateful for it.
I wasn’t sure whether to do a round up this year, as it takes so long to put together and like everyone else I’m so thinly stretched right now. But I’m SO glad I did. It’s so powerfully reconnected me with my core purpose – the whole reason why I am a family photographer – to see and celebrate the magic in people – to connect families with their own unique beauty, stories and adventures. Because in tough times and when things seem bleak – this magic between ourselves and our loved ones is the ultimate tonic and nothing can touch that.
Thank you so much to all the wonderful families who invited me to share a little slice of their lives this year – you have all been, without exception, a total joy. Thanks to you I’ve split my sides laughing and hurt my cheeks grinning… You’ve shown me so much more of the world and made my heart leap. As for you little ones, being the old lady that I am, you’ve also well and truly knackered my knees crawling around after you on your magical little adventures – but it’s been worth every single ache and creak. You’re all amazing. Here are a few of my faves…
