Mentoring montage

In response to popular demand, I’m now offering a limited number of one-to-one mentoring sessions for photographers and aspiring photographers, both face-to-face sessions at my home, and also online sessions via Skype. If you think these might be for you, I’d love to meet you!

Running a photography business can be like spinning plates – you’re not just a photographer, you’re an administrator, retoucher, blogger, marketer, customer care manager, artist, product designer, technical geek and crowd controller, amongst many other things! It’s an incredibly rewarding career but it can be overwhelming at times to navigate the wide variety of tasks required to be successful, and to identify which areas need most attention at any given time, especially when working alone, as most photographers do. When just starting out, it can be confusing to know where and when you should begin, and difficult to look objectively at your own business and assess which areas most need development. When I first started out as a photographer, I had no clue where to begin – I had a ‘to-do’ list the length of my arm and little idea of the best order and methods to tackle it. This is where mentoring comes in – an opportunity to have an objective third party, who understands the industry, look at your business with you, help you to identify where you might best focus your attention, and provide tailored support specifically for you, your business and your aspirations for the future.

Over the last couple of years I’ve received regular requests from other photographers and aspiring photographers to provide mentoring sessions. Please understand I don’t know everything there is to know about running a successful photography business. I’m still learning all the time and have made plenty of mistakes as I’ve gone along. But I’ve been running my own successful photography business for nearly 7 years now, having built it from scratch, and along the way, I’ve learned a lot of lessons. Things that worked, things that didn’t… things that work if approached in the right way, things that are disastrous if approached in the wrong way… things that cost a lot more than they’re worth, free things worth their weight in gold… things I can do myself, things best left to other experts… things that were a waste of time, things that saved me a lot of time….. I‘ll never stop learning and improving, but I am finally at a place where I’m confident in my own style, have developed a recognisable brand, operate an efficient workflow, have loyal and enthusiastic supporters and followers both within and outside the industry, attract and work with my ideal clients, and make a reasonable living doing what I love. I can’t offer you a definitive answer to every question and I can’t offer you a recipe for sure-fire success, but what I can offer you is honesty, support, experience, a friendly face and a willingness to share with you anything and everything that I have learned and found useful during my time as a photographer.

If you’d like to out more about the mentoring sessions I offer, please contact me and I’ll whizz some information over, I’d love to hear from you!
