This is one of my all-time favourite In The WildΒ shoots. CharlotteΒ is an amazing photographer – I first met her when she came along to one of my Roost family photography workshops and we instantly hit it off – she’s so warm, funny and kind. When she got in touch to ask me to come and photograph her extended family while her brother was visiting from Australia I jumped at the chance.
I knew the shoot would be fun, and her lovely kids Florence, Dougie and Stan didn’t disappoint. We had a blast. Everyone including grandparents and uncles joined in rampaging around. We started off splashing and paddling in the mere, then headed into the woods to explore, climbing and jumping off trees, hiding, balancing on logs and finding sticks. Then we had a wander along the canal, playing under the bridges, peering through holes in the brickwork and peeking over the top.
It was wonderful to see the kids get gradually more and more relaxed and wild. T-shirts got thrown off, leaves were woven into hair, everyone ended up barefoot and the kids clambered around giggling and joyfully dishevelled. Finally, tired, mucky and happy it was time for the walk home, the kids taking it in turns (or sometimes two at a time!) for piggybacks and shoulder rides. Pretty perfect afternoon really…
