World Book Day: favourite kids’ books

With it being World Book Day today, I thought I’d share one of my own family’s all-time favourite kids’ books… Would You Rather…? by John Burningham.

This book has been around for a long time, and with good reason. I’ve had it on our shelves for well over 12 years since Joe (now 14) was a toddler. It’s still as well-loved now as it was then. Joe adored it for years, and now Huey (aged 4) loves it just as much.

WHY IS THIS OUR FAVOURITE KIDS BOOK?

It’s one of those rare books that no matter how many times I’ve read it (and over the last 12 years I’ve read it a LOT!) I never get bored of it. It’s full of those fabulous John Burningham illustrations and gives little minds (and bigger, more knackered minds) plenty to look at and chat and giggle about.

Each page gives the reader a choice to make between various comical/fun options… β€œWould you rather eat spider stew / slug dumplings / mashed worms?… Would you rather your house be surrounded by water / snow / jungle?… Would you rather your dad did a dance at school / your mum made a fuss in a cafΓ©?”

Sometimes even just reading the options aloud is amusing, but usually the kids’ responses are even funnier. In a world where it’s not uncommon to be reading a book for the 5492363238th time, this book is different each time you read it as often their choices change.

You can make it as short or as long as you want, and can tailor it to different ages. If you’re pushed for time or you’re reading to a younger child, you can just let them point to and choose their β€˜pick’. But if you’ve got the time and inclination, or you’re reading it to slightly older children, it’s loads of fun to ask them why they picked it – their answers are often hilarious. You can obviously also ask β€˜why not’ about the other options…

It’s just a brilliant book to prompt funny, light-hearted chats and discussions and get their little brains and imaginations whirring, rather than them just sitting there being passively read to.

I’m also pretty excited as while finding the link to the book for this article, I came across this – A SEQUEL! More Would You Rather will be published at the end of May 2019, happy days!

What are your all-time favourite kids’ books? Please do comment below, I’m always after some ace kids’ book suggestions, it’d be great to get a little library of suggestions together from our collective hive-mind!
